About Sit and Go Tournaments

The Sit-and-Go tournaments (SNG) are a type of current online poker championship with millions of players around the world. The main characteristic of the "SNG" is that there is no set time, i.e. it starts when there are enough players.

How it works

The player pays the entry fee and sits down at the table. When the seats run out, the tournament begins. Each player receives a fixed quantity of chips to use for betting. If you run out of chips, you're out, and the table continues until only one remains.

Types of sit and gos

Most online sit-and-gos are one-table affairs. You can find some multi-tables - but they also start when the number of vacancies is filled, and not at a fixed time.

The normal SNG, at a table with nine or ten players, usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, which is great if you're short on time. In addition to these Sit-and-Gos, there are also some with six, three and even two players (heads-up). The poker room Poker Stars is one of the poker rooms offering SNG from 2 to 9 players.

Awards

The prize pool also varies according to the tournament, but in most cases it works like this:

  • 9 or 10 players - 1st to 3rd
  • 6 players - 1st and 2nd (in some cases even 3rd)
  • 3 players - 1
  • 2 players - 1

The entry fee determines the prize pool. In $5+0.50 tournaments, the entry fee is $5.5 dollars, leaving 50 cents as the rake, and $5 dollars for the prize pool. In this case, if the tournament has ten players, there will be $50 dollars in prizes, divided as follows: 1st place with $25, 2nd place with $15, 3rd with $10. This type of division is the most common, but there are variations between programs.

I've been playing a lot of six-person games that pay for three. It doesn't pay much, but just be careful and you'll hit the jackpot.
