Hey guys, LAPT Chile is coming up and I'm here to give you some tips for those who are going to play their first LAPT
1- Remember that the tournament is not just for Brazilians
In Brazilian tournaments like the BSOP, we're used to a very cordial atmosphere at the table, where everyone jokes with everyone else, and a few small talkers go unnoticed by the dealer.
The atmosphere at the LAPT is a little more serious, mainly because of the language barrier, since people generally speak Spanish and know each other less than in Brazilian tournaments. So it's good to be prepared for a different atmosphere from tournaments here in Brazil
2- Study the main Latin American players
It's always important to know who the best players at our tables are. In Brazil this is easier as the big names in national poker are known to everyone. However, at the LAPT we face a number of excellent players from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Colombia. That's why it's important to know how to recognize them at the table. One tip is to look at the written coverage of other editions of the LAPT to see what the continent's best players look like
3- Don't treat the tournament as the tournament of your life
This tip is a classic in every beginner's guide, but it's always worth reinforcing.
Many players, when they go to their first major tournament, prefer to play more cautiously in order to get more value out of the tournament, but strategically this isn't always the best way to go.
The mindset of a professional poker player is always to make the best decision possible, regardless of whether that decision is a fold, a big bluff or a value bet, and poker tournaments are nothing more than an opportunity for the professional to make these moves. So focus on that, forget that you're playing a LAPT and try to make the best plays you can find.
4- Use the time
Another common beginner's mistake is to get too excited in big tournaments, thinking that if he takes too long to think, the table will get angry with him, etc.
This means that the player ends up making rash decisions for nothing and is therefore completely counter-productive.
Remember that any player who thinks for 10 seconds to make a decision is better than that same player who thinks for 4 seconds.
So stop, breathe and execute your moves calmly
5- Meet people
One of the coolest things about events like LAPT is the chance to meet people from different backgrounds, different countries and different professions. So strike up a conversation at the table, catch up with the pros when you think it's a good opportunity and remember that everyone is away from home like you, so people are usually willing to talk. This kind of networking is one of the main keys to advancing a poker player's career.
