The Importance of Position in Poker

Position in poker is extremely important. It is an easy and practical concept to understand, but at the same time, it is ignored by most beginner players. Joile Bronson, the creator of Texas Hold'em, confirms this thesis: “If you have position in poker, you have everything.” Before we learn the basic concepts of positions in terms of the game, we first need to know the names of all the positions at the table, as we can see below:

Introduction

First, we have the mandatory bets for each round, the small blind and the big blind. Then, the initial positions UTG and UTG+1 begin, which are the first players to act. In the MP1, MP2, MP3 positions we have the intermediate places and, next, the final positions, the CO and the BTN (Dealer), the position desired by every player at the table.

Thus, the players who occupy the last positions are the most privileged in the action, for the simple fact that they are the last to act in the hand, as they can observe their opponent's action before taking their own.

For beginner players to know how to act regarding the position at the table, there is a table that shows which cards to play at each seat at the table, as we can see below:

Note that in late positions we play more hands, as we have an advantage over our opponents due to the position we find ourselves in at the table.

Example 1 – Hero in Position

Blinds: 15/30
Hero: :Ah :Qh in CO. Standard 3 big blinds raise: 90 chips
Villain: Calls in the big blind.
Flop: :Kd , :4c , :6s .
Villain: Check.
Hero: Bet 110 chips.
Villain: Fold.

Position is extremely important in this play, because you didn't hit anything on the flop and, consequently, your opponent didn't either. As you are in position in relation to him, you can make a continuation bet and take down the pot.

Example 2 – Hero Out of Position

Blinds: 15/30:
Hero: :Ah :Qc from UTG. Makes a standard raise of 3 big blinds: 90 chips.
Villain: CO, just call.
Flop: :Kd , :4c , :6s .
Hero: Check
Villain: Bet 110 chips.
Hero: Fold.

In this situation, you are out of position, which allows the villain to make a continuation bet, and since you didn't hit the flop, you will need to throw away your cards.

Conclusion

Position is a basic tool that is easy to understand and that helps players make the right decisions. It is also important because sometimes we don't hit the flop, and continuation betting in position helps us accumulate a lot of chips, especially in micro games, where this virtue is not known by most players.

Players do not need to follow the table 100%, so much so that professional players do not use it fully, because in the world of poker there is no fixed range, each range must be adapted to the structure of each table; However, for beginner players it is recommended to follow it, because, this way, they will not put themselves in extremely marginal situations, where they can lose a lot of chips, compromising the tournament.

  1. Fold JJ or TT in late position if a villain raises, only if it's very tight, one of those rocks that only plays AA in position. I even agree with folding QQ, if you have the information that only raises when it has a lot of value, you can let go.

    • I doubt anyone would fold JJ, TT, QQ when they have 150 thousand stacks and the others have an average of 20 thousand, that is, it all depends on the occasion, any risk that won't take you out of the game and that won't shake 50% of your stacks, is worth the risk... if you lose you'll be left with 130, if you win it will go up a lot.
In fact, poker is complicated and simple at the same time, IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE OCCASION

  2. You can call me stupid, but I don't understand one thing, what do you mean by the number of raises in front of you? I don't understand.

    • Hello, André! Good afternoon.
      Don’t worry… This is a common question.
The number of raises “ahead of you” is nothing more than the number of people who raised before it was your turn.
For example, if I have a table with 6 people, if one player raises and another re-raises (i.e. another raise), then there are two raises ahead of you. Ok?
      Att.,

    • As a beginner player, it is essential to only play good hands to learn the ABCs of the game, but obviously thinking about an intermediate to advanced level of play, you really have to know how to play with what you have.

This is where the entire repertoire of tools, moves, reading, position, etc. in poker comes into play.
