About Freerolls (Free Poker Tournaments)

In this article we explain basic concepts about free poker tournaments – freerolls.

What are freerolls (free poker tournaments) and how do they work?

If you've ever played online poker, you've probably seen tournaments called freerolls. These are tournaments with free entry and variable prize pools. Sometimes the prize pool is in the form of entries to other tournaments, or even cash.

For inexperienced players, they are a good way to practice participating in major championships, as they usually bring together hundreds of people. In some cases, the prize money can be quite large.

There are three basic types of freerolls:

1. Direct entry. It is a completely free type, with no prerequisites. In this case, you just need to open the tournament during the registration period and sign up. In some cases, these are huge tournaments, which can have more than a thousand participants depending on the poker room used. Poker programs such as Party Poker, Poker Stars and Full Tilt Poker offer several such freerolls per day.

2. Entry by points. In this type of freeroll, entry is “bought” with points. Poker programs usually offer a points system related to the number of games you participate in. You earn points as you play for money online at closed tables or tournaments. These points-based freerolls usually have much better prizes and a smaller number of participants. In some cases, the prizes are quite high, but so are the points required.

3. Entry by prerequisite. A modality that is becoming quite common, in which the tournament is free, but with prerequisites. The most common are: user who made a recent deposit and new user (recent account creation).

An example that fits the type 3 mentioned above is the new depositors freeroll that some rooms offer (examples: betboo, titan poker). The prerequisite to participate is to make your first deposit of money in these poker programs.
