Exploiting regular players at microstakes

The biggest mistake an average NL10 regular player makes is that they are extremely ABC Tight Aggressive. They are very predictable and don't like to think - they use a formula (or, the famous cake recipe) to win and get used to it. This style of play is extremely value-based, so when playing against them, be careful if you don't have the nuts.

There are three basic types of regulars

The first, which seems to be the minority and represents a decent portion of NL10 players, doesn’t want any trouble. They just want to take the fish’s money and if a regular starts bothering them too much, they’ll just walk away. In this case, just let them hand over their money to you. Get into lots of pots against this type and play a lot in position, let them C-bet every flop and then fold on the turn when they have nothing. If you’re lucky the fish will keep this regular “fed” and they won’t even realize how much they’re losing to you.

The second type of regular (the majority) is a more entertaining type, and you can make more money against them if you play well. These guys are still pretty predictable, but they will try to take on anyone who gets in their way, and they will try to find a way to take you on. They are not used to playing outside their comfort zone, so when they do try, they will probably make horrible mistakes, so just have a good dynamic, and use it to your advantage. When you see one of these guys, wait for a few good hands and start 3-betting against the hands they open from late position, starting with a wide range and then reducing and increasing the quality of your hands. The more you do this, the more they will think you are “messing around”, and they will start to want to take you on. Gradually reduce your range, so when they finally start taking you on with top pair, you will have the nuts. It works really well and will make them very nervous!

The third type of regular will definitely be in the minority, and are the players who really think ahead. They will 3-BET light, counter your post-flop play, and generally make your life miserable. Unless there is a really bad fish at the table, or you have position against this regular, it is usually best to move tables.

If you want to take money from regulars, you need to read them. Understanding trends and taking advantage of them, as well as understanding the dynamics of the table and how this information will affect the villain's mind is very important. Practice and become an expert in these concepts and you will easily go through all the micro stakes levels as a winner!
