Hello Poker Tips readers, today I will be starting a series of articles about the journey needed to become a poker professional. I will be writing about strategies, bankroll and tilt control, SNG, MTT, among other topics related to the area. My goal is to show you the entire journey of a poker player, but first I will summarize my career in poker.
My nickname is Matuks, I've been playing Poker professionally since 2011. I started playing live cash and ended up coming to Online Poker when I started a project with a friend, which would be to deposit $50 and turn it into $50k. During that time I ended up joining the pre-Steal, I formed a team with 2 friends called WTF team, and I'm currently playing for a foreign team.
Article 1 – Decision and time
If you are reading this article, you have probably already thought about, or are thinking about, becoming a professional poker player. However, before doing so, you should analyze all the factors involved in your decision:
- Reality vs. Illusion
The mistake I see most beginners make is believing that being a poker player means they won't have to work, they won't have to study and they'll have an easier life. If this is your initial thought, you can look for another profession, because if your goal is to be a poker player, you'll have to work and study much more than others. You really have to love what you're doing so you don't give up halfway. Without this, you'll be just "another player" among many who don't achieve the success they want.
- Dividing your time
First of all, you need to choose the type of game you will play. Depending on your time, you can play SNG, MTT or Cash game:
- SNG: By playing Sng you can manage your registration schedule and have control over how long your workday will last. Even if your schedule is reduced, you can still make a large volume of Sng.
- MTT: To play MTT you will need a long work day to have a good volume. I recommend it for those who do not have commitments that could interfere with the tournament. For example, if you register for 4 MTTs at 1:00 pm, and have a commitment at 4:00 pm, it is preferable to play SNG or Cash, because when you have a commitment set, you are already waiting for it to fall through so you can fulfill it, and that is like throwing money away.
- Cash Game: With the possibility of starting and finishing the game whenever you want, we have the Cash game. I won't go into much detail about this mode now because I'm not the best person to talk about it. During the “Steps of a Pro” I intend to go into more detail about SNG and MTT, which were the modes that gave me the most profit.
And that concludes today's topic. In the next article we will talk about bankroll management, money management and variance.
Glossary:
SNG: Sit and Go
MTT: Multi table tournament
