Rules: Closed Poker (5CD)

Five Card Draw is one of the oldest forms of poker and is still very popular, especially in family games. Unlike poker games that have community cards, such as Texas Holdem and Omaha, in five card draw each player uses his or her own cards, which are only revealed at the end of the hand. Therefore, the ability to read your opponent is crucial, based on their actions and card draws.

There are two ways to play 5-card draw. In the most common form in informal games, each player pays a pingo (ante) before receiving the cards and the first to act is the player to the left of the dealer. After the draw (exchange of cards), the first to act will be the one who bet first in the first round.

In the most modern form of closed-bet poker, present in some online poker programs, there is no traditional ante, and the order of bets is determined by whoever is in the “dealer” position for that round. This player is given the dealer button to represent his position. The player immediately to the left of the dealer is the small blind, and places a forced half bet. To his left is the big blind, who places a forced bet.

Example 1: In a 2/4 game, the minimum bet is 2 chips. The small blind would bet 1 chip and the big blind would bet 2 chips before they even receive their cards.

Initial round (before trade)

After the forced bets (blinds), five cards are dealt to each player, one at a time, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. The first player to act is the one to the left of the big blind, and he or she can fold, call the minimum bet (call), or raise the minimum bet (raise). Each player then does the same. The round proceeds clockwise. If a player has raised, the next player must call or raise the amount of the raise if he or she wishes to continue in the hand. In “limit” games, you can raise only one more minimum bet up to a limit of three raises in total per round; in “no limit” games, you can raise up to your entire stack of chips. In “pot limit” games, the maximum raise allowed is the number of chips in the current pot.

Example 2: Game continues 2/4, big blind has posted 2, small blind has posted 1. The player to the left of the big blind can choose to fold and get out of the hand, call 2 chips and stay in the hand, or raise to 4 chips or more (in limit games he can only raise one more minimum bet up to the limit; in no limit games he can raise up to his entire stack of chips). Action proceeds clockwise.

Exchange of Cards (Draw)

Once the round is over, the draw begins. The player closest to the left of the dealer button can choose to discard and exchange one or more cards from his or her hand, with the intention of improving it. The player can also choose not to exchange any cards if he or she is satisfied with his or her initial hand. Then, in clockwise order, the other players do the same.

Final round of betting

After this, the final round of betting begins with the player closest to the dealer button (on the left). The minimum bets in this round are doubled. The player can either bet or check. Checking means not wanting to bet anymore, but still continuing in the hand. It may happen that everyone checks and the round ends. If any player bets after someone else has checked, the round will go back to that last player, who must call or raise the bet to continue in the hand.

Example 3: Continuing the 2/4 chip game, the draw took place next, in which each remaining player chose how many and which cards to exchange. After this phase, the last round of betting takes place, but the minimum bet is now 4 chips.
After each player has taken action in this round, if there is still more than one active player, the showdown occurs – they reveal their cards and the best five-card hand wins, according to the standard poker hand rankings.

NOTE.: In the official rules of closed poker, the suit does not break a tie. However, there are home rules with this, so it would be in this order (descending): spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs. (same order as the bridge game).

  1. Peter asked:
“I have a question about closed poker.
there were 6 players at the table.
the 1st bettor bet 1 chip, the 2nd bettor increased the bet to 3 chips, the 3rd bettor increased to 5 chips, the 4th bettor to 9 chips, the 5th bettor ran, the sixth also ran.
The first bettor arrived again with 9 chips for the bet, he who had already placed 1 only paid by placing 8 more. When the second bettor who had already placed 3 chips at the beginning, could he increase this bet that was at 9 or was he obliged to just match because the first bettor just matched?”

    And the answer:
Pedro, it depends on what format you are using in the closed poker game.

Apparently, with each bettor putting in as much as they want, they are playing “no limit”, and anyone can raise whenever they want until they run out of chips.

If it is a “limit” game, the second bettor could only have raised to 2, the third to 3, and the fourth to 4. And the maximum is three raises before buying cards. After buying cards, the minimum bet would double to 2 chips, and each one could raise to two more chips, up to a maximum of 3 raises.

    I hope that is clear.

  2. I have a question that I would like to clarify. Is there a fixed rule for awarding a prize to a player who has played a very difficult game? Like a Four or a Straight Flush? And if there is a prize, if in the same round two participants get a Four at the same time, do both of them receive the prize or only the participant who has the highest Four? Kind regards.
    Frames.

    • According to the oldest and most traditional rule, both players will receive the agreed prize for four. Obviously, the two who made four will not receive one from the other, since they both owe the same amount... so between the two who made four, nothing is paid, but the other players must pay two prizes, one for each one who made four.

      • Just a note: this story about prizes for strong hands is a house rule and must be agreed upon before starting the game. It is not in the official rules.

  3. Marcos, in normal games there is no prize just because you played a special game.

This can happen in some casinos, or in some online poker program that has this type of bonus, but it is not common in closed poker games.

Making a special play is a matter of luck, and modern poker has focused on moving away from the paradigm of being a game of chance.

  4. I want to know about the prizes in the poker game:

EX.: If two people make “four” at the same time, in the same play …… everyone participating at the table must pay the prize to both for the “four” ….. or whoever makes the biggest “four” wins ????? I think that …… if a prize is stipulated for the “four” and ……….. both made “four” ……….. both must receive the stipulated prize (since THERE IS A PRIZE FOR THOSE WHO MAKE FOUR) regardless of who won the game !!!!

Am I wrong ??????? Please send reply to the email above !!!!

  5. Reporting that …… at the beginning of the game, all participants stipulated that there would be a prize for whoever got “four”, we just couldn’t predict that two “fours” would come out at the same time!!!! Do they both deserve the prize???

    Please reply!!! Thank you!!!!

  6. Martha, there is no such rule. If you have decided on this as a household rule, you should agree among yourselves what it would be like.

If the agreement was a prize for four, both should receive it.

    • Dear all, I agree that what is agreed upon in this case should prevail. But let's look at a line of reasoning: The biggest game is always the one that counts! Correct? If this is correct, then the smallest four does not count, therefore no prize payment is due.
Another question to be raised: If I make a prize game, but everyone folds to a bet… I think the prize is not due, since no one paid to see my game. What do you think?

  7. Hello friends,
I'm returning after many years to play my good old poker with friends. However, I came across the Texas holdem style that I didn't know (I only played closed poker and another one that we called Mexican poker).
I would like to know how I can play online without having to spend money, because I have seen on other sites that it is possible to win small prizes without having to spend anything at all. Is this really true?
Can you give me a step-by-step guide on how to do this?
And finally… Could you recommend a Brazilian website where I could register to play online here in Brazil?
Sorry for the excess of questions, and congratulations on the initiative of building the website.
Thanks for now for any help you can give me.
    Hugs to all poker lovers.

  8. Dear friends, one more question.
Are online poker sites “free rolls” really free or is it just another lure to “catch the unsuspecting internet users who like poker”?
I looked at some so called freerolls but they all ask for a deposit. What is this anyway, can someone explain to me, I'm very confused. Thanks for any answers.

  9. Lívio, there are hundreds of online poker programs, some serious and others not so much.

Here we only publish those that are of quality and reliable.

I suggest visiting the page https://pokerdicas.com/programas to find out about the best ones, and those that already have a Portuguese version.

Regarding freerolls, some do require a deposit, but not all. Register on our forum and find out about the freerolls we promote – these do not require a deposit.

  10. Luiz, you can exchange up to 5 cards in the official rule.

Some house rules allow for up to 4 exchanges.

If there are many players and they exchange many cards, there is a risk of the deck running out. If this happens, just pick up the discarded cards and reshuffle them and use them.

  11. In the case of closed poker at a table with 5 players, the small blind bets 5 chips, the big blind bets 10. Don't the others need to bet at this point? Is it correct? Only when the player to the left of the big blind bets do the others bet, including the small blind and the big blind, and all this before dealing the cards?

2nd question: when exchanging cards, how many cards can you exchange? All of them?

  12. Before dealing the cards, only the small and big bet, 5 and 10 chips respectively.

    Then the cards are dealt.

Then the player to the left of the big blind decides to match the big blind's 10 chips, fold, or raise the bet. And so it goes until the table is rounded.

In the exchange of cards, you can usually exchange up to 5 cards. This must be defined before the game starts.

  13. In closed poker, where there are 4, 5 or 6 players, and the cards that make up the deck are 7 to Ace, 6 to Ace and 5 to Ace, respectively, does the Full House always beat the Flush or not?

  14. Carlos, only in house rules does a flush beat a full house.

In the official rule, which uses the entire deck, it is the opposite.

The best thing to do is to agree in advance with the people who are going to play to avoid confusion.

  15. I wanted to know something,,,
c I have an Ace of hearts and a 3 of diamonds in my hand..

then the cards on the table come a KQJ 10 all of hearts,

Can I discard my 3 of diamonds to make a Royal Straight Flush???

    thanks.

  16. Marcelo.
In closed poker, when I receive a complete hand, I need to inform out loud that I do not need a card or I can refuse, and when it is my turn to buy, I make a negative sign to the player acting as dealer.
Is there a rule about this or is it up to the players to agree?
    Grateful.

  17. I came across a poker game with dice. They are placed in a cup and only the player can see them. He calls out his hand and passes it on to the next player, who believes it or not. And so on, always having to pass on a bigger hand. The game has an English name and I can't find it. I know it's all the rage on Wall Street. Thanks.

  18. When exchanging cards
    How do you do that?
    discard cards from hand (1~~5)
and take more cards from the deck?
How many times can you do this?
Do you have to pay extra for this?

  19. Good evening everyone.
I'm new to this type of game, I live on the border with Argentina where there is a casino that is very popular with my friends.
There is a type of poker that I would like to know the name of so I can learn more about it. It is played with 5 cards for each player at the table and 5 for the dealer. Only 1 card can be exchanged and each player plays with their own hand, the 5 players against the table. Bets start with 1 ante chip, and always double that for the game bet. The cards are dealt, exchanges are made, then the bets and finally the games are shown. If the table does not make any type of game, that is, does not classify, it will not be necessary to turn the cards over.

    A big hug to everyone.

    Thanks.

  20. I have a question….
There are two players in the game, one bets and the other calls (pays to see). Is it mandatory to show both “hands”? If the player who calls sees that the opponent’s hand is higher (and therefore loses), is he obliged to show his hand anyway? Can’t he simply “throw” his cards on the table?

  21. Junior, I don't know about the game you mentioned.

Romeo, it is possible to throw away the cards without showing them, if you see that you have lost.

Unless there is a rule where you are playing that prevents this.

    • Bruno, closed poker from 7 to Ace is a house rule, so you should agree beforehand.

But I believe that the chance of a flush would remain the same, but the chances of a full house would increase, so it might even make sense to make this inversion!

  22. Good afternoon colleagues, I have a question:

In closed poker, when there are 4 players at the table, if one of them makes a bet, another “calls to see” and two others fold, should the player who is going to show his game do so to everyone at the table, or just to the one who “called to see”?

  23. Could you explain better, when the player asks for a table he can analyze the situation of the other players, does this mean he can see the cards of the others?????????

    • No, when he checks, he doesn't want to bet anything else, and it only counts if no one has bet before. So when he checks, he stays in the game but without increasing the pot. Obviously, if someone bets after him, he will have to match the bet if he wants to stay in the hand.

  24. When a player wants to exchange his cards, can he exchange 1, look at the one he received and then exchange another, or does he have to exchange all the cards (up to 3) and then see the cards he received????

    • You must exchange them all at once, and you can even exchange all five if you want, according to the official rules. In house rules, you can set a maximum for the exchange.

    • In the case of a tie in closed poker, two things can happen: the one with the highest suit wins, or the one with the highest suit leaves it as a tie and the chips are split. I think a tie is better. As for the suits, you have to agree in advance on the sequence of suits from highest to lowest, but I don't think it's necessary because it's very rare to tie in closed poker.

  25. I would like to know if in closed poker the suits have different values, for example, playing 1 with a set of three and a pair (10, J, Q, K, A) of hearts and player 2 with the same sequence but with clubs. Does one suit have more value than the other? If so, what is the order of values?
Thank you and congratulations on the site!

    • Three of a kind? Do you mean straight?

In the official rules of closed poker, the suit does not break a tie.

There are house rules for this, so it would be in this order (descending): spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs. (same order as the bridge game).

  26. Hello, I would like to know if it is possible to bet after the games start to open, for example, if I start the hand, I open my cards and then the next person can bet on my cards or not. After the games start to open, you can no longer bet.

  27. Is there any rule for home poker, in the case of stipulating prizes for games above four, that the table "falls", that is, you have already heard the term the table fell and thus a new round begins in which everyone participates with a greater number of chips and the opening of the table with a minimum of two pairs, one of which is figurative?

    • Hello. Unfortunately I didn't understand your question. Household rules are very individual so we can't know exactly what can or can't be done. Thank you.

    • Yes, you are required to show all your cards, as a poker hand is always made up of 5 cards (including in Texas Hold'em, where you must show both hole cards).

  28. Hello. How many times can cards be bought? (not to be confused with how many can be bought, that's what I understood) Is it according to the rounds? If so, how many rounds can there be?

    • Hello!

In 5CD, as far as I know, it is only ONE DRAW (one purchase, that is, one round). Okay? And in this draw, 0 (zero) to 5 (five – full hand) cards can be exchanged.

However, there is, for example, the 2-7 Triple Draw, where there are three purchases. But that is a completely different modality…

  29. Hello, let's suppose that I started the game with ANTES and not with BLINDS, and everyone bet a chip of the same value before receiving the cards. After the cards were dealt in the first round of betting, could I check? Since everyone bet the same amount before receiving the cards (thus "matching" the cards and them going to the pot)?

  30. I'm trying to learn poker to play with friends, but the person who taught me is wrong from what I've seen on the internet.
From what I'm researching, it works like this:
1 – In the first round there are the blinds and the 1st bets. If you call or raise you stay in the game, right?
2 – In the second round, cards are exchanged (or not) and betting begins again. This is where I get confused about the dynamics of the game.
. give up, ok – exit the game.
. Did you check, not bet, but continue in the game?
.copper, does everyone have to show their cards?
. It increased, the following covers and asks to see?
. or at the end of the betting everyone who is covering or raising shows their cards and the best hand wins? I'm confused! lol
. The next player to raise

  31. I have a question. Regarding the exchange of letters!
I would like to understand better how it works, especially if it is done from player to player... (I understand the discard, it is like in any game I suppose; you discard one and take another from the deck)
But I don't understand the exchange between players!!…
