Does poker have variance or not? – AAKKARI

afsalagoas: After all, does poker have variance or not?

aakkari Blog – I suggest you read the entire blog to understand everything.

I would like to share with you this important and sensational post from our Team Pro Aakkari. Mainly because of this post from a reader:

“Akkari, aren’t you ashamed of selling this poker dream?
That's not how it works and you know it very well, taking 2 examples and talking is easy, how many hot guys haven't gone through 10k games down or breakeven at some point in their lives...
Stop selling this illusion to young people, yes poker is possible, it is possible to be a pro, but that is not the dream you sell, how many thousands of young people are giving up on going to college and etc because of your posts”
My opinion:

Pokerdicas is perhaps one of the Brazilian poker-related forums that can introduce beginners to this complex and “crazy” world of poker. Nowadays, information processing is incredibly fast, and in a matter of seconds, one person informs another about news, freerolls and promotions. However, it is faster than all of this when a beginner enters a certain tournament, for example $2.20 $5k GTD and wins 800$, or even a sng 8$ 180 Players turbo and manages to win it. In my opinion, there is no nation (with all due respect) where people want to make money quickly and easily than our country. We are bombarded all day long with raffles, titles and bingo to test our “faith”.
Here comes poker, accessible to everyone, cheap investment and phenomenal return, we could not expect with so much marketing and treating it as a sport, (normal) a number of users joining and believing in this sport.

In order not to make the text too long, especially because I am not the ideal person to address the subject of variance, precisely because I am not a grinder, just trying to learn more and more in this new phase and be profitable in the long term, but I am really hoping for a long time, I will invite a partner of ours @ricardons8, to talk a little about variance and possibly its graph. It would be very interesting to know how a professional deals with it, for example, being profitable all his life with about 150k of positive profit, and recently knowing that he had for example 190k of profit, and today it is -$40k negative, for us the little line comes up "I wish I had 40k negative, but with the general graph 150k positive, but I am sure for them it is very different. Another detail, for example, a player I know, he is profitable, does a lot of final stretch, FT but has been BE for a long time, how to deal with this?

The second part would be precisely this idea of dropping everything and becoming a professional, based on reports from winning players, such as Alê Gomes, but for me in this case the articles are more biased, because it is easy to publicize who achieved the goal and those who did not achieve it, went broke or gave up on the journey, what did they do after that? In this part I would like to hear the opinions of our partners @Petrillo and @Marcelo, especially Petrillo who achieved or is seeking a balance between playing poker with quality and goals and living a busy life as an engineer.

I will comment a little more later.

Marcelo: afsalagoas congratulations on your proposal.

Man, what I think is that like you said, sometimes people get excited after winning something and think they're the new Negreanu, the new Akkari.

They don't realize how difficult the game is and that for perhaps 80% of people it will never be profitable.

I cover this in my most commented topic: //pokerdicas.com/forum/avisos-noticias/2528-responsabilidade-equilibrio.html

My approach to poker is to have fun; Petrillo's is to supplement income and have fun; while for others it is work.

But you can go to any college and work with it your whole life, receiving a salary even if you're not great at what you do, without suffering losses.

But being a poker player is very similar to being an investor in the stock market. There are people who will never have enough talent and dedication to do it. Some will earn a little, making a profit, but not enough to be their main source of income. And very few will get rich from it.

Falcao 09: Good post Alex :happy34:, I'm a bit short on time right now but I'll come back here later to read what everyone thinks and give my opinion, and I'd really like to hear the opinion of a player like Ricardo on this subject.

rafaelnsilva: @afsalagoas Your post is really cool, I really liked it.

I remember well that in 2012 when I started to discover Poker, I was very excited about the game and ventured into SNG of $1.50 9Man and, surprisingly, I ended up clinching. At that time, I thought I could become an exemplary player outside of average just with this clinching. But with time and other SNGs, I discovered that I was out of touch with reality and not with my feet on the ground.

I realized exactly how Poker is a very difficult game to play, interpret, understand. If you don't focus on studies, technique and volume, you won't get results and that's why I only returned to the tables in 2014, because I knew exactly that I would have better conditions to play, especially because I couldn't give up everything to want to become a professional; I had college, a wife, a job, an apartment to pay for, among other things.

I believe it is possible, the person just needs to believe that they can, but without technique, knowledge and volume it will never be profitable and will never make the game your main source of income.

Brionac: Akkari always says that the life of a poker pro is difficult and he works on motivation and makes it clear that dedication is the basics in today's poker. But this speech only blinds the young person who has discovered poker and thinks that the life of a player is glamorous or an easy way to make money (I included myself when I started studying) or the player who hates his job or, worse, is unemployed.

It's no wonder that his courses are packed, after all he is a great ambassador who works well on motivation and that's why he is the only Brazilian pro team. But these texts, and others, are sometimes very shallow and let Akkari's advertising side reappear. I remember seeing an old topic on 2plus2 about the number of games needed to beat variance and it always seemed like a game with a risk of ending negatively, even though he was a winning player.

And variance is only remembered when someone loses money, few remember when the effect is the opposite.

Daximmous: I found his post very accurate, it's a post that I didn't want any of my opponents to read!

afsalagoas: after all, he is a great ambassador who works well with motivation and that is why he is the only team for the Brazilian team.
.

Just a correction currently he is not the only Brazilian Pro team Pokerstars. A guy who contributed a lot to poker, especially PESSAGNO, who is also a team player.

I haven't been able to talk to ricardons8 yet, I know he's grinding a lot.

Brionac: Pessagno is Team Online (a requirement for a supernova, grinder and content generator) and Ronaldo is Team Sport (a famous and popular athlete), a Team Pro is the “combination” of the two.

Daximmous: Dude, I think Akkari couldn't be better in his statements. I mean, poker isn't easy. It's a sport that requires everything to really make money, it requires determination, willpower, fighting day after day. It requires being responsible and critical about your situations. Much more than that, it requires studying to understand how complex it is to be successful. If after reading all this, if that's still what you want, if you love what you do, go ahead!

Variance exists and it's hurting everyone!
The question is what to do when you see it? How to understand it? How to avoid it? How to know if it is a down or a leak? It's all very complex... I believe that all pro players should have a database to always check for leaks, to always be up to date.

Poker is evolution, it's war, it's one chewing the other and everyone getting hit by randomness like in life! It's about being better and evolving as a thinking being, a being that focuses on solutions, not problems!

We must be adults and face not only poker but life! Those who do not improve themselves and understand the randomness of poker and life itself are not yet ready to live! We need to go for it and give our all! However, ignorance is deceiving! That is why these little black guys will always be there doing a lot of dirty work and giving us money. Those who evolve will escape this cycle.

If you make an estimate of $ per month and take out a reasonable amount that will allow you to live, whatever comes is profit! So even if your ROI plummets at the end of the month, or doubles it in a big hit, it won't make a difference if the calculations are as expected, all these risks should already be noticeable, we poker players must understand that life is made of this and plan even outside our expectations! That's what makes us true players! Which is nothing more than true connoisseurs of the roulette of life.
