Poker is a complex game, and only with a lot of study and practice can you become a good player. But follow the tips below and you'll be on the right track.
1. Be the aggressor
Every time you bet or raise, you open up space for your opponent to fold. When you just call or check, they don’t fold… and your profit drops.
2. Play YOUR game
Trying to play like Tom Dwan can be very costly if that is not your natural style. There are many profitable styles in poker, and playing your style will increase your winnings.
3. Take your dog for a walk
Seriously, there is a life outside of poker. If you take good care of yourself, your game will be better and you will win more. Walk the dog.
4. Use rules to stop gambling
It may be wrong according to theory, but predefined rules for stopping playing can work wonders for you. Knowing when to stop and having rules for doing so is very important for your game.
5. Think about Poker
The more time you spend thinking about your plays – calls, bluffs, folds – the better you will get… and the better you get, the more you will win.
6. Get a bonus
Playing enough to clear a bonus is a great way to make up for lost rake. A good bonus always helps boost your bankroll.
7. Don't play too scared
If every bet at the table makes your body tremble, you will become fearful and overly cautious (in a negative way). Your opponents will sense this and take advantage of you. When they take advantage of you, your profits will decrease.
8. Don't play without any fear
If losing big pots doesn't make you feel bad, you'll start simply calling too many bets. When you just call too many bets, your profits will drop. Look for appropriate limits.
9. Keep calm
No matter what happens, stay cool. Losing your temper will only make you lose your money.
10. Take notes on your opponents
If a certain guy re-raised you in early position with AJ 5 years ago, use that against him. A quick check of your notes can help you dominate your opponent by understanding his betting patterns and style.
11. Be honest about your mistakes
Making excuses for your bad plays is a surefire way to never improve your game. If you admit you made a mistake once, you may never have to make it again.
12. Train hard
In practice, good decisions are often made using the power of intuition and gut feeling. The only way to perfect this skill is through training. Only by playing thousands of hands will you be able to make excellent decisions based on your “gut feeling”.
13. Play according to your position
Being the last to act is an excellent advantage. You control the information and can always adjust to your opponents' actions. By playing your hands in position, you will improve your profit.
14. Do the opposite of what your opponents do
When they're maniacs, take it easy, play it safe. When they get serious and play it safe, play it safe. It's like "Rock, Paper, Scissors": When they choose rock, you choose paper; when they choose paper, you go with the scissors.
15. Never play tired
You need to be focused to play. When you are tired, your concentration decreases… and so does your profit.
16. Learn to go out
When you are playing badly, stop playing. Get up, move on with your life and you will avoid losing money. One of the keys to becoming a profitable gambler is knowing how to quit when you are playing badly.
17. Choose a good website
You will play best on the site you feel most comfortable on, and this is important so you can focus and play your best game.
18. Don't play when you're drunk
Poker is a game of rational decision-making. When you're drunk, you don't have the ability to make intelligent decisions.
19. Choose your starting hands wisely
Some starting hands are more valuable than others. If your starting hand range is better than your opponent's, you'll likely win in the long run.
20. Avoid playing when you are in the blinds
When you play in the blinds, you are in a very bad position. Avoid playing in your blinds, even if you already have a small investment in the hand. An exception is when you are in the big blind and are only up against the small blind, because in this situation you are the last to act.
21. Be creative when you have a position
Playing speculative hands like 76 (“Nice Hand, Petrillo!”) can be very profitable if the stacks are deep, but save these actions for when you have position. Trying to be creative out of position can be very costly.
22. Read good books
Reading is the key to learning. Practice is essential, but reading can greatly accelerate your learning curve. With each good book you read, your profits will only increase.
23. Talk about poker
Many pros say that their game development has a lot to do with discussing poker with their friends. Every time you discuss a play or a theory, you improve your own view of poker.
24. Choose your tables carefully
Your poker profits come from other people's mistakes. Don't sit at tables where other players play flawless poker. If those players are nice, buy them dinner. It will be much cheaper.
25. Sit to the left of the maniac
Sit to the left of the maniac at your table. This way you have position on him and can better choose which hands to play against his wild, aggressive play.
26. Don't make a move-up when you're losing
If you’ve lost a few buy-ins, raising the price of those buy-ins is a very effective way to go broke. In reality, the best thing to do is to lower your level. It’s common for people to try to “recover” from losses by going to higher levels, and this usually backfires.
27. Analyze your hands
Don't just focus on the game. Spend some time analyzing your hands and trying to figure out what you did wrong and what you did right. It's also a good idea to discuss them with other people. Analyzing your hands will definitely increase your winnings.
28. Take notes in live games
Some people think they have perfect memories, but you're not Stu Ungar. Small notes during the game are good for later analysis of the game.
29. Study your stats
By looking at your stats, you can discover patterns in your play that aren’t obvious when you look at individual hands. “Oops, AJ in early position gives me an average loss of $5.” Just don’t let stats get in the way of a game situation.
30. Use statistics programs
A tool that analyzes all your hand histories can be a boon to your game. It gives you a new perspective on your patterns. Some examples of good programs include Holdem Manager, Poker Tracker, SNG Wizard.
31. Watch poker on TV
Like it or not, the professional players who appear on television are brilliant.
32. Watch poker on TV without sound
Everything can be clearer if you watch on mute. You can better perceive body language, notice each player's expressions better.
33. Watch a poker show over and over again
When you watch it repeatedly, new points of view can be perceived… and in this way you improve your game.
34. Play in multiple poker rooms
Each online poker room has its pros and cons. Playing at different rooms can help you get a taste of each one. But make sure you choose a reputable program – check out our Poker Programs page.
35. Play with the right people
One player can drive you crazy just by being yourself. Another player will constantly profit off of you. Stay away from both of these types, because they will destabilize you.
